Introduction:
  • Hypothesis: - The Americanisation of the world has allowed a wider range of audiences to recognise things such as glamorous actors or something that is unique to appeal to them and become something that is intriguing.
  • Plot Summary of The Mentalist – Ex-psychic con Patrick Jane joins the CBI in order to apprehend the murderer of his wife and child and have revenge whilst also supporting the CBI with everyday cases with his excellent eye for detail.
  • Patrick Jane’s character is that of a likeable one and therefore attracts audiences to watch the programme and maintain their engagement
Paragraph one:
  • Americanisation and how the Mentalist supports the hypothesis that was introduced at the start.
  • “In their process of Americanization these elites have had to open up to the general public’s demand to new kinds of entertainment and to market forces geared to meet these demands” – Discuss the relevance to the Mentalist and how the characters appeal to audiences – Hall, Gramsci (reception theory and hegemony)
Paragraph two:
  • Sherlock Holmes – how the characters are similar in some ways and audiences find this entertaining (U&G). –reception theory, hyper-reality (Baudrillard)
  • Historical comparisons with Sherlock Holmes and a particular film - "The 'whodunit' makes its dramatic question absolutely explicit, and the quest to find the answer is led by the protagonist."
  • Genre appeal (Stephen Neale) – “mere repetition would not attract the audience” – blend of genres in The Mentalist
Paragraph three:

  • Narrative heroes - “Our main protagonist endures a love/hate relationship with himself” - Vladimir Propp, Stuart Hall
  • "However there has been a shift toward investigative crime series, where the protagonist must think instead of fight"
  • Similarities to other TV Programmes such as Dexter, Hawaii Five-O, Psych which are all American fictional programmes but also real life TV Crime documentaries such as Evil I.
  • Contrast to the genres however appeal is similar for most audiences.
  • Actors and star appeal, lighting (mise-en-scene)
Conclusion:
  • State if the hypothesis has been proven and how/why is this is the case?
  • How is The Mentalist a typical American TV protagonist and answer the main question which the Critical Investigation is based on.
